Lumina

Type Design
Fall 2024
Lumina (pronounced LOO-muh-nuh) is the plural of lumen, meaning the cavity of a tubular organ or part.

Lumina Typeface is a decorative display typeface inspired by the hidden geometry of nature. Using samples of crystals and dried coral from the RISD Nature Lab, I observed their intricate forms under a microscope—then extracted, deconstructed, and reassembled these natural structures into letterforms using Adobe Illustrator. The symmetrical, radial, and random shapes created by Mother Nature made the type design process both playful and awe-inspiring.

This project explores the unexpected dialogue between organic formations and graphic design, revealing how nature’s logic can unlock new typographic possibilities.

In the next phase of the project, I translated the full Lumina typeface into sound and presented both the audio and a 3D version of the font in an interactive online virtual gallery.
